President’s Letter: Edition 13

Hi All Sharks,

Tuesday 24th July saw all our Colts, U18YG, Life Members, past Presidents, Parents, Helpers and Representatives enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Club Kilsyth. We shared on the foundations of how the Club has been built over the last 49 years with statistics and figures. This further continued into the Club’s vision going forward and the opportunities for all boys and girls being given the chance to be in a team environment and being part of something special. The PONRPJFC is a bastion to create positive growth whilst offering a pathway for every player and family to be the best they can be. The legacy we have inherited via previous Committees is important to us and the pressure to continue is acknowledged.

Thanks goes to Mason Witnish, our Under 19’s Captain and Michael Prosenak, the Senior’s Vice Captain for their attendance and speeches. They shared with us their journey from The Sharks JFC and the transition into the PCFNC family.

This was followed up with Daniel Gorringe sharing his time from the Draft to his seven seasons as an AFL footballer. Taken No. 10 in the super draft of 2010 on the Gold Coast, his name called out first that year as it was top down. From his excitement of the Draft, to his Rookie Season for the Suns, then onto major injury. The frank and open discourse shared by Daniel of his life at the Suns, the times of injury and the ultimate rejection by his coach had everyone hanging onto his every word. The move to Carlton gave him a new lease of lease of life until cruelled by Achilles injuries for a third time left him bereft of an AFL career.

We felt his passion and disappointment at trying to understand “Daniel Gorringe – The Elite Footballer” was no longer. It’s what and how he saw himself. Now he had to show grit, determination, fortitude, and redesign who he was in life. What a heavy burden for anyone to bear, let alone a 24/25 year old. Thankfully, he has commenced a new career and has rediscovered his love of football now playing with the Sharks senior side.

Thank you and well done Daniel for sharing your true feelings, walk to date in life and a vision in going forward. A message all our young players can take on board and put into action, when the going gets tough, or events at times look a little cloudy.

I was delightfully advised by the YJFL at Wednesday night’s President’s meeting of three wonderful achievements in 2018. Whilst our club is committed to friendship and participation in the U8’s and U9’s this changes as the years go by. As bodies mature and skill levels increase the Sharks have various pathways of opportunity available for players who demonstrate great composure, ability, skills and maturity. This is not to take away from players enjoying their weekly matches but intensity in upper levels is regularly scouted. This year we have three players who have made the YJFL upper age Teams of the Year.

Representing the P.O.N.R.P.J.F.C. in the Colts is Alex Magnano. Representing the Sharks in the Youth Girls are Katerina Stylianou and Isabelle Pollock. On behalf of the club, the committee offer heartfelt congratulations to the three who have made this year’s 2018 team and been recognised for their efforts. Over the next few weeks, I hope to receive confirmation of other Sharks players who have been selected in their age groups.

On a more sombre note, we reach out to the Scanlon family and offer a thoughts and prayers. Tom played his junior football at the Sharks and tragically, in only his early 20’s, passed away Sunday morning. His siblings, Sam, Jack and Lucy are also former Sharks. To the family, we are feeling your tragic loss and offer our assistance however it may be needed.
