President’s Message: Grand Final 2016

Hi All Sharks

And then that was the season of 2016….

Thank you to all Sharks that came out in their drives on Sunday. Three Grand Finals spaced over the whole day. Attendance was fantastic by supporters wearing Red, Black and White.

un11-black-sharks-gf-bluediv-premiers img_1295The U11’s Black kicked off at 10.15am into a firm breeze. Within the first quarter they had set the scene by scoring a couple of goals whilst holding their opponents scoreless. Things continued along these lines for the whole match. Well done Grand Final Winners U11 Black 10.19.79 to 1.1.7.

Two weeks ago the U15’s Red pulverised Fitzroy in the Semis by 9 goals. With a week’s rest and niggling injuries under control, the boys sought to show Fitzroy the intensity of Grand Finals. Unfortunately, the opposition had other thoughts and really came to play. They were desperate, clean and quick in transition. Our Sharks battled hard and were in it for most of the game. Whilst the final score didn’t go to script, I’m personally proud of how the boys went about playing out not only the match but the season in total. Final scores U15 Red defeated by Fitzroy 6.13.49 to 14.8.92.

Colts Red have focused for the year playing in Division 1.

Never have PONRPJFC ever qualified for a Grand Final in Div 1. The boys wanted to create history, could they though as fairy tales rarely happen. Two weeks prior, Fitzroy had beaten the Sharks by 10 goals straight. The first quarter was a tough affair, both sides circling each other as prize fighters would in round 1 of a championship. The second quarter was ‘no questions given’ in a tough bruising encounter whereby Fitzroy tried to throw even the kitchen sink at the boys. However, they held firm and went in at half time 1 point down. They say that the third quarter is the championship quarter and Tim reved his chargers to take control. Standing on the fence, I said “Gee, I’d like to see 2 or 3 goals this quarter”. At ¾ time, our boys had added seven goals for the 23 minutes. The final term saw a see-saw affair of game play until the final siren signalled ‘History had been made!’

Those magnificent Sharks Colts had won, 11.7.73 to Fitzroy 7.7.49

Both sides were gallant and had played hard, tough and uncompromising football. Congratulations to all involved.

Well done all players from our three teams on the day. You gave your best and did your team mates proud.

As Meatloaf said “2 out of 3 ain’t bad’
