Ash Firebrace – Indigenous artist of the Sharks Junior Training Top

The Sharks Junior Football Club has been lucky enough to work with Yorta Yorta/Wurundjeri artist Ash Firebrace to create the indigenous artwork on our new training tops.

Ash Firebrace is a Melbourne based artist whose painting journey began at the age of 10. Ash describes the Firebrace family as having a passion for art and painting that extends through the generations. Although his talent was discovered early on, Ash really found his love of art when he started further studies in Learning Pathways for Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

He finds his source of creative ideas in the bush and can draw from a rich heritage and experience to create stunning and meaningful artworks.

He spends a few days a week working with a heritage and land management team, spending time in the bush. Ash’s favourite place and special space being the water creeks. He finds it a great healer for his mental health and has used the bush especially over the last 2 years.

In 2007, Ash received the Lin Onus Award at the Victorian Indigenous Art Awards for a portrait of the Wurundjeri leader and artist William Barak. Ash’s art can also be seen at the underpass that links the Main Yarra Trail from east to west on the Eastern Freeway (south) side of the Yarra River. The underpass features a painted 60-metre-long mural, celebrating the cultural heritage of the area. The mural was designed and painted in 2019 by Ash Firebrace and Tom Civil and is inspired by the story of how the Yarra River was formed (as told by respected elder Barak).

Ash kindly took on our Sharks training tops as a project.

The artwork represents how the Wurundjeri tribe use to occupy the area and would travel & camp along the Yarra River, living with and respecting the environment.

Grab yours today in our Merchandise Store!

Special thank you to our sponsors, whose generosity has allowed us to engage the artist and also keep the price affordable.

Food for Families Collection 18-31 July

Uniting Vic Tas Food For Families is a great way to get together to make a tangible difference to the lives of individuals and families experiencing hardship and crisis throughout the year.

The junior and senior clubs are asking families who are able to donate non-perishable and household essential items to this worthy program throughout the month of July.

By supplying food and other essential items, you can ensure vulnerable people facing crisis can access the basics they need to get through a difficult time. All food donated goes directly to people in crisis.

Last year just over 32 tonnes of food was collected, but it wasn’t enough to meet the growing demand. Food relief is growing with an increase in presentation of between 30-40% in the past year.

Accepted items include:

  • Pasta, rice and noodles
  • Flour, polenta and couscous
  • Tinned tomatoes, pasta sauces
  • Beans, chickpeas and lentils
  • Tinned tuna, salmon and ham
  • Soups, curries and vegetables
  • Baby food, nappies and formula
  • Spreads – e.g. jam, Vegemite
  • Long life milk and cheese
  • Tea, coffee, Milo and sugar
  • Stir fry sauces and soy sauce
  • Coconut milk and coconut cream
  • Breakfast cereal and muesli bars
  • Toothpaste and toothbrushes
  • Shampoo, conditioner and soap

Families are encouraged to give their donations to their TMs at training or drop them into a collection box located in the Domeney club rooms from Monday 18th July until Sunday 31st July.

Thank you for your support.

President Talk: Round 4, 2022

As we reach the end of what has been a busy four weeks of grading, I would like to thank the committee, coaches, team managers, parents and players who have been so patient over the past few weeks.

Countless hours have been dedicated to this process. We have been working closely with the Yarra Junior Football league (YJFL) to ensure that all our teams play the remainder of the season at a level that is appropriate for their ability. By going through this rigorous process it means that each team will be with the other teams of similar ability making it a fair and competitive season ahead.

We look forward to getting to season really going now and wish everyone good luck as we head into round 5. Go Sharks!

Thank you to Dean

After 6 years on the Sharks committee, Dean Prest stepped down from his role as Director of Football.

Being part of any community club committee is one of the most rewarding roles of all. Friendships are made and that feeling of contributing back to the community is priceless.

He has been an integral and valued member of the Sharks and have helped make important decisions and changes both on and off the field. He has added so much value to the club in his time as a member of the committee. The committee is sincerely grateful for Dean’s tireless contribution over the past few years.

Dean isn’t going far as he will continue his role as coach for the Under 13 team. We wish Dean and his team a successful season ahead. Thank you Dean!

(Please note that Michael James has taken on the role as interim Director of Football)

President Talk: Round 3, 2022

After much anticipation, Season 2022 is off to a flying start.

Over the last few Sundays, teams have been scattered across the region as the sound of football echoes across the suburbs. Football is back!

Of course, a season doesn’t just happen overnight. I would like to kick off the season with a note of gratitude.

A huge thanks goes to the incredible Sharks committee who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes over the past couple of months to get the season up and running.

It hasn’t always been smooth sailing with many curve balls thrown at us along the way. None of us are perfect but we all share the same passion of community and are focussed on our players and families reconnecting and having fun.

Thank you also to the coaches who have dedicated hours of their weeks to ensure that each child get to enjoy the thrills of football once more. We appreciate the time and effort that you put in each week on top of your daily lives to ensure that our kids get the best footy experience as possible.

Finally, I would also like to thank all the parents and supporters who give their time each week to help with training and on game day to help things run smoothly.

We honestly couldn’t run a season without you all so THANK YOU.

It is this level of commitment and support from volunteers that ensures our club continues to thrive.

Let’s make season 2022 the best yet.

Go Sharks!!

Thanks a million

A Message from YJFL

Message from the league regarding Umpires and Medics. All registered players will have received the below info via an email from YJFL. Please be very aware and considerate of the challenges leagues and clubs are facing on this issue. This situation is out of the club’s hands

Teams will need to be prepared with a parent (or older sibling) on standby in case league umpires are not available.

Providing field umpires will be considered priority by the league over boundary umpires. Always have a parent (or older sibling) assigned as a boundary umpire.

All football leagues around the state face a shortage of umpires and we are no exception. This means some games (especially in U13-U15) will have only one League umpire and your Club must provide an additional umpire. We are actively recruiting and welcome those with any interest. It is a great way to stay involved, keep fit, have fun and get paid. Maybe you have an older child that could umpire or maybe you would like to umpire with one of your children?

Our game day medic supplier Colbrow are also facing staff scarcity problems. But for the start of this season we are 30 medics short of what we need. If you are medically qualified and would be interested in being your clubs medic on Sunday we will pay you to be a member of the Colbrow team. We always aim to provide a qualified medic to all games, but the start to this year will look different. We will look to spread the medics we do have evenly amongst the grounds, and will rotate their venues each week.

Practice Games Sunday 27th March

Boundary and Goal Umpires are to be filled by Parents/Older siblings – please refer to the schedule
